FIND A WEIGHT-NEUTRAL DOCTOR

If you are afraid to go to the doctor or feel like your doctor isn’t aligned with your new way of relating to your body, you deserve a doctor who will work for and with you, whether you’re fat or thin. Try to find a doctor who will give you the same options no matter what your weight is. You are allowed to seek health without being shamed for your weight or eating.

Tool #2: Lie Down

I don’t want to “lean in”—I want to lie down.

—ALI WONG

Yep. Really. Lie down.

Every day, take at least ten minutes and lie down. After work. During lunch. While your kids are napping, or at school, or at soccer practice. Lie down. Lie down in your bed. Lie down on the couch. Lie down on the floor. Lie down on a yoga mat. I don’t care where, just lie down, close your eyes, and do nothing for ten minutes.

You can get nice and comfortable, you can use pillows and blankets and eye pillows if you want to. But do nothing. Just let yourself be, and do nothing, for ten minutes.

You’ll be tempted to bring your phone into bed and browse. Don’t. Not looking at your phone is the one part of these ten minutes that is different from everything else you do all day long: I need you to give yourself a moment to stop doing. Stop having an agenda. Stop taking in info. Stop trying to figure things out. Stop scrolling.

Your brain won’t stop going—it never ever will. That’s okay, that’s just what brains do. Just give it permission to stop if it wants to. Give it a chance to rest, even if it doesn’t take you up on the opportunity.

We never ever let ourselves rest. We don’t think we deserve it. We don’t think we are allowed, physically or mentally or emotionally, to take the time for ourselves. We don’t think it’s worth it or helpful. But because we never slow down, our stress hormones are always pumping at high gear. Physically, these stress hormones actually increase our risk of disease.54 And mentally, this puts us in chronic fight-or-flight mode, constantly on alert. We think that pushing a little harder is going to be the answer. It’s not. Lie down.

The people who do not believe they deserve to lie down and do nothing for ten minutes really, really, need to lie down and do nothing for ten minutes.

The people who do not believe they have the time to lie down and do nothing for ten minutes really, really, need to lie down and do nothing for ten minutes.

My student Chiara told me, “I was resistant and skeptical, but I cannot believe how much doing the lie-down has changed my life. It is so simple, but so restorative. It definitely makes me calmer, but I think I’m now a better, kinder person too.”

This is physical self-care, giving your body a genuine, adult time-out. Prove to yourself that you deserve ten minutes to lie horizontal.
